20 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 20th [April 1899]. Worked at my medal. Wrote letters. Had a visit from Mr Christie to ask me to get H.R.H. to go to see the English Church. Directly after lunch I went out in gondola & fetched Iduna Belmondo & took her out with me. We went to the “Osborne”. I paid Miss Knollys a visit & then saw the Pss of Wales who took me to the saloon & we sat talking some time. She gave me a photo: of a portrait of her [by] Hughes—pretty but not like. The Pss gave me instructions as to sending home her fountain. She said she would like to go & see the English Church & would like to present a candelabra for the chancel if the Empress Frederick gave the other. I had told Mr Christie to be at the church on the chance & there we found him when we got there. I & Iduna went on before hand & received her. I presented Mr Christie & Iduna Belmondo to H.R.H. & the 2 Princesses– They said amiable things about the church—& then we went to the Biondetti’s marble works close by & to Rubelli’s silk looms & H.R.H. took photographs there– We took leave of her as she leaves for Corfù abt 6 o’cl. Iduna & I returned to the Osborne & wrote our names in H.R.H. book & then returned to our homes. Css Miari came to tea with me & I had a long visit from Signor Manati who is interesting to talk to. He married at Persico & settled at Venice.
