21 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 21st [April 1899]. Wrote letters. Had visit from Mr Christie & a talk on church matters. Lina Duff Gordon also came to see me being in Venice for a few days with friends. I asked her to return this eveng & dine with me which she did. She is looking very handsome but very pale. After luncheon I went out in gondola with Iduna. In the Piazza I came across Lord William Cecil & Lady Florence his wife & they promised to come later to see me so I went to the Eden’s garden & had 5 o’cl tea there. The garden is now lovely with anemones & wallflowers & lilies of the valley & tulips. The iris will be out in mass in a few days. I returned home at 5.30 & then had a long pleasant visit from the William Cecils—& Lina came & dined with me & left at 10.30–
