25 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 25th [April 1899]. St Marks Day. I went off in gondola at 10 picked up first Iduna & then Mrs Eden & we went to hear Perosi’s Mass at St Mark’s. A great function going on and the Palla d’oro on view. The Church looked very beautiful. We got chairs luckily as it was a very long affair. Iduna left us there at 12 & went home. Carry & I stayed till nearly 1 & then I walked with her to her house & lunched hastily with her & then we took the 1st steamer to the public gardens & went to see the Art Exhibition. It was a trying thing the pictures in general were so bad. The Dutch school was the only one which was really fine. The Scotch school one of the worst. By 3 o’clock we were quite exhausted—& were going wearily to take the steamer home when happily my gondola turned up & we went home in quiet comfort. I had no rest as I had first a visit from Frau Hermann Passini & charming & beautiful daughter– Later came Signor Gioja a Roman artist introduced to me by Css Passini—& Passini himself—& also the Dss della Grazia. I was very tired & glad of a quiet evening.
