26 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 26th [April 1899]. Lina Duff Gordon came to see me. Sr Gioja once again to see the pictures. I packed my things for London to send my boxes off tonight with the servants. I went out after lunch shopping. It began to rain heavily so I came home. The Belmondos, Dss della Grazia, & her daughter Maria came to tea also Mr Moore. There was a light thunderstorm. I went to dine with the Edens so as to have the servants free to get off by 11.30 train this eveng & when I returned they were gone. Old Pasquale, the old servant tells me very unpleasant facts about my English man servant’s behaviour since he has been here which makes me anxious. I sent Pasquale to the station with them to see them off. He tells me that instead of 6 boxes I had told them to take they had 8. I doubt they will try to make me pay the extra.
