28 April 1899 — Milan
Friday. 28th April [1899]. Woke with a dreadful headache & feeling so ill I remained in bed till the last moment before the train went & then walked to the station & left by 12.30 train for Bale. A very full train & only 1st class passengers so I took Knapp with me & very lucky it was for I got worse & worse & was dreadfully sick & faint. I got better before I got to Bâle at 8. Then I got into the sleeping car of the Calais train & found myself with 2 ladies, mother & daughter—who were very kind & pleasant & I disovered to be Lady & Miss Rendle & we had many mutual friends.
