28 May 1899 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Sunday. 28th [May 1899]. Went to morning service. A Mr Grimston preached a very good sermon in aid of the Mission to Navies at work in England on railways &c. Francie & F. Thesiger came over to luncheon from Yarrells on their bycicles & remained on to dinner leaving afterwards. Francie & I spent some time in the afternoon taking the pattern of the old embroidery on the walls of the room I slept in. Went to evening service at 6.30. It was a lovely day & quite warm. Canford looked quite in its beauty—but I shall not care to stay here long. I miss Henry here more acutely than ever. I am disturbed in my mind at Ivor’s resolution to sell 4 of his finest altar pieces; pictures got for him by Henry & the gems of the collection here. He finds them too big for his drawing room! & has sent them to Christie’s to be sold. They are pictures by Botticelli, Romanino, Lorenzo Costa & Dosso Dossi. What a thing it is not to understand art! & yet to have so much money.
