31 May 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 31st [May 1899]. Had a visit in the morning from Arthur Du Cane who came to invite me to the Temple flower show. We had a long talk over the unfortunate coming Merthyr Rhuvon lawsuit which now seems inevitable. Directly after lunch I drove to King’s Bench walk to fetch Arthur & went with him into the Show. There were some splendid things & amongst the novelties were yellow Arum lilies– It was a very hot day & the tents where the flowers are shown were very oppressive. A band was playing & ladies in gaudy attire sitting about on the lawn. The fashionable colours this year are dazzling & trying to the eyes besides being very unbecoming. I came straight home at 4.30 to rest & have tea. Mr Bishop came to see me & talk about the affairs of Venezia Murano. After that Mrs Tom Bruce came & then the two Eliot girls, Constance’s daughters. I dined with Francie & Fred Thesiger. A pleasant little dinner. Met Mr Abbey the US painter & his wife—intelligent nice people, also Mr Webb a great cricketer & his wife.
