5 June 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 5th [June 1899]. Wrote all morning. Sent out invitations for a dinner here on 22 & another on 29th. Elaine & Mr Villiers came to lunch. They came up from the country to spend a few days with the Thesigers. They tell me their poor nurse is dying in the hospital at Wimborne. Tuberculosis of the brain. Ernest Villiers suspects it is the result of vaccination. She was vaccinated about 2 months ago—it took badly & she has never been well since. The Wimborne Dr says it is impossible—but E.V. is not thus of persuaded. Merthyr came in to see me for a few minutes but was in a hurry to be off & said he wd return after 5. I went for a drive from 3 to 5 to leave cards on acquaintances & called on Mrs T. Bruce & on Mrs (Carrie) Somes. It was a tremendously hot day. Over 80 in the shade. Last week there were 10º of frost. I dined with Mr & Mrs Rate. Met Archbishop of York, Lord & Lady Medway, Hon. F. Leveson Gower– Latter took me to dinner. He is as nice & kindly & pleasant as ever—& hardly at all aged– Nelly dined with the Merthyr Guests & meeting there Arthur Du Cane brought him back here & I found them in Monty’s sitting room when I returned home at 11 & we had a little chat.
