7 June 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 7th [June 1899]. Constance & her girl B. came to lunch at 1 o’cl in a great hurry to go off again & catch a 2 o’cl train to Windsor where they were going to an Agricultural Show. It was still very hot so I remained at home & read. At 5 Theo & her girl Augusta came to tea & then later Lady de Winton & her 2 girls, Onie & Irène Ponsonby & Nellie Alderson– Afterwards I went out in the brougham—took the Ponsonbys to their house & went on to see Maria. Met her just as she came in from her drive in her bath chair & made her come for a drive with me. We drove to Lady Vivian’s to enquire after her. Found the girls in consternation as their mother is pronounced to have got the measles. Took Maria home & then returned home to my own dinner as it was past 8 when I got in. Nellie went off down to Hatfield to stay with Lady Salisbury who is not well again & is to have an operation after her party on 10th. After dinner Constance suddenly made her appearance, having been to Windsor & not dined. I gave her coffee & she sat & poured out to me all her sorrow over her wretched son Ernest who is in debt again & is a horrible worry to her. It is heart breaking to see her grief & it is impossible to cheer her. We were brought up together & she has all the hardships while I am in prosperity.
