8 June 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 8th [June 1899]. Suddenly much colder. I was busy all morng tearing up old accts &c. Mme Nevada Palmer & T. Palmer her husband came to lunch & brought with them Pablo Casals a Spanish violincello player who has brought me an introduction from Mme Riaño. He is brought up by the Queen (Christina) of Spain. Is 22 & a genius. After lunch he played to Connie’s accompaniment. By chance Evely Eliot’s cello was here & some violin music which he at once transposed for the cello. He has a lovely sweet touch– When he had played over the piece once he began it again by heart. He was delighted with Connie’s accompaniment. When they left I drove Connie to 20 Brook St & left her with Blanche who had a sale going on at her Garry Hill Depôt. Went to see how Lady Vivian is & then came home. I also called on Lady Stanhope & sat a while with her. We were great friends in our youth & are always glad to be together again. Sophy Palmer looked in in the morning left her bag & then returned for dinner & we had a long talk in the evening & she slept here in Nellie’s room–
