9 June 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 9th [June 1899]. Sophy & I each breakfasted in our rooms & then she went out. I was so worried about Constance that I jumped into a cab & went up to Cav. Sqr to consult Blanche as to what can be done. She had also had a sleepless night over the affair. She says she will take counsel of Edward & let me know. I hastened back to give Sophy lunch & she left by 1.40 train for Oxford. Nellie returned also from Hatfield & says Lady Salisbury has had her operation 28 pints of water taken from inside her & the Drs are satisfied with the result. I left London in afternoon & went by train to Hatfield to stay with Monty Alderson. Travelled down with Lady Robert Cecil & Mrs (Daisy) Pryor. Reggie Alderson was in the train & from Hatfield Station we went to the Chaplain’s House in the carriage with Lady Robert & she left us there. R & I had tea & then walked to the Vineyard & sat by the water. Lovely warm evening the birds singing, ducks & swans swimming about & a bumble bee humming & looking for his hole in the grass. It had been a cloudy but the sun came out just then before it set. Monty A. returned from his parish work to dinner at 8.13. Now that he has let rooms to Mr Clayton a brother curate he has to dine in the drawing room.
