10 June 1899 — Hatfield | |
Saturday. 10th [June 1899]. Breakfasted at 9 & then we set to work to rearrange the drawing room for our lunch party. We were to amalgamate our party with Mr Claytons & he gave his room as dining room. Then having arranged 2 tables at one of which Monty was to preside & Mr Clayton at the other we went off to the station to meet the train from Peterboro’ in which came Lady Mary Glyn (wife of the Bishop of Peterboro’), my sister Kate, & Eda & Mary her daughters. Later Sir Edmund Du Cane & his daughters May & Freda & Irène Ponsonby arrived as Mr Clayton’s guests. I had brought down my cook Jane & the 2 men servants & I gave the entertainment & a cold luncheon & all seemed to enjoy themselves. We were 12 of us & after lunch we all went to Monty’s drawing room– Monty played the piano & Irène sang & we chatted till 4 when we went up to the garden party at Hatfield House. Lady Gwendolen received the company for her mother who is in bed with bronchitis. There were an immense number of people who came from London—5 special trains having been provided. Tho’ there were 2 distinct gardens—2 music bands—two tea tents there seemed to be crowds in every direction. I saw a great many people I knew—all cordial & kind especially Mr Lecky who said he hoped I was coming back to establish myself in London. The D. & Dss of York came down by train & the Gd Duke Michael of Russia. Later the Prince of Wales came & he slept at the house & remains till Monday. The others returned to London before dinner. I returned to Chaplain’s House at 7. Irène Ponsonby stayed to dinner & Louis Du Cane. Lady Mary Glyn, Eda & Mary went back to Peterboro’. Kate remained & slept in my bed—as there was no other place for her. Irène & Louis left for town about 10. | |
