3 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 3rd [July 1899]. I expected Monty to come to town from Cowes this morning & to leave at 3 so I telegraphed to Miss Hogarth to put her off from luncheon as we had previously settled– Monty did not come till the afternoon so after lunch I drove off to Miss Hogarth in a hansom as I had lent Maria the carriage. I found her at home & arranged with her to come & dine with me—& then I walked home. At 4 I went to the Burlington Club at 17 in this row on Mr John Ward’s invitation to see the small collection of loan things they have on view. There is a beautiful Reynolds portrait belonging to Lord Clanricarde which has been with its face to the wall at his chambers in the Albany for many years. A pretty Greuze—2 fine Turner sketches & a Rossetti—some of Watts pictures &c. I saw Sir Henry & Lady Tait & made their acquaintance. He seems infirm & complained his memory is bad. Lady Tait is evidently much younger than him & has a pleasant face. Returned home to tea– Monty arrived abt 6 & I went to his sitting room & had a long talk with him. I told him I have paid to his bank £750 that he may pay to Mrs Drax the rent of Bere Regis which is owing by Arthur’s executors & for which Monty is responsible. Monty has not got the money & I have so I have paid & will get back what I can when Arthur’s affairs are settled up. I sent the carriage to fetch Miss Hogarth & we dined quietly together & then I sent her home to 31 Egerton Terrace again at 10 o’clock & went to bed soon after.
