7 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 7th July [1899]. Nela & I went off at 12 in a hansom to see Dr Maclagan whose medicines I have taken these last 10 days. To my dismay he orders me to go to Carlsbad to drink the waters & then to go to Meran to complete the cure. I have promised to spend August at Bessborough & this puts out all my plans. We returned home to lunch at 1.30. Had a visit from Lady Louisa Legge who has just returned from Italy. At 4 Nela & I sallied forth in the carriage to go to Constance’s afternoon party– I went first to see Julie Clay Seymer & then on to 8 Onslow Gardens. Dr & Mme Nevada Palmer were there, Señor Casals & Herr Ludwig. Princess Christian & her daughter Pss Victoria were there & enjoyed the music. Casals played—Mme Nevada sang & her daughter Mignon a girl of 12 also sang charmingly & simply. She is a big girl in short frocks & with her fair hair in long curls– Herr Ludwig played the violin. There were many of Connie’s friends there– We had tea served in the large sitting room on the ground floor & some people went out into the gardens. It was very hot all day. I brought Nela home by 6.30. Dressed & went to dine with Mr & Mrs Wm Lowther at Lowther Lodge– A beautiful house like a country house with a nice garden– Mr Aleck Hood took me to dinner & I had our host on my right. Met there Mrs Hugh Hammersley Carry Eden’s niece a lovely but very delicate young creature–
