8 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 8th [July 1899]. I went out to lunch with Lady Somers at 20 Park Lane & met there the Bishop of Ripon & Mrs Boyd Carpenter, Lady Kennard, Mr Augustus Hare, Miss Alice Duff Gordon & Mr Mocatta. I sat between Miss D. Gordon & the Bishop who was very pleasant. He had to hurry off to go by train to Windsor as he preaches tomorrow before the Queen. Lady Kennard is very handsome, with quite white hair & about my own age. Miss D. Gordon seemed to me much aged & bent. At 3 Nela called for me in my carriage & we went to pay a visit to old Sir Collingwood Dickson whom we found sitting in his little study looking pale & old & bent. He complained of rheumatism in the chest & said he had hardly been out since Christmas. He was pleased to see me—but it pained me to see the great old soldier looking so infirm. We left some cards in Grosvenor Road & then returned home. There was a Volunteer review going on at the Horse Guards before the P. & Pss of Wales & tho’ the traffic was splendidly managed it took us some time to drive home by a circuitous route. I came home to tea with Nellie & then we walked out. I went to try & see Dr Burton to ask him what he thought abt my going to Carlsbad or no– He was out so I came home. It was a very oppressive hot day. Nellie went to Arlington St to ask how Lady Salisbury is & she came back with bad news that she had had a slight stroke at Walmer. Nela came & dined with us.
