14 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 14th July [1899]. Quiet morning at home. At 1 went to see Dr Burton & told him Weber has said I may go to Plombières & I have decided to go with Ivor. Ordered some copies of photos: of Passini’s picture of Henry at Agnews. Came home—lunched alone. Went to 20 Brook St to see Miss Jeffery & settled abt some patterns to be worked by the Garry Hill Industry. Went in a hansom to call on Maria. From there another hansom took me to 14 Gros. Crescent to tea with Theodora where I met several people, Lady Sligo, Lady A. Russell, Mrs Bishop (née Bird), the traveller with whom I had a little chat. She is getting old & rather stout but has an interesting countenance. I reminded her that she knew Henry & she said he had been kind to her about her travels in Persia & that her journeys in the North of Persia had dovetailed with his in the South. Met also the Nevada Palmers & was to have met her friend Mrs Whelan who desired to make my acquaintance, having been at the Angleterre at Rome while I was there last winter. I remained on till 7 chatting with Merthyr when all were gone & then I walked home– Miss Oswell dined with Nellie & me & sat chatting till 11– She had now a type writing office & 5 clerks & is doing well—but deplores the want of society. We advise her to join a lady’s Club & I offered to pay her first year’s subscription– My maid Knapp went off home tonight for her holiday.
