15 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 15th [July 1899]. Sat at home quietly all day. Except for a run into Regent St to look for a present to give Mme Nevada Palmer’s little girl—before luncheon. At tea time had a visit from the Miss Monks & Lady Vivian & her 3 girls & Aura Guest. Later Merthyr & Theo joined us. I went to dine with the Duncannons to meet Hollman the violincellist and Wolff the violinist—Lord & Lady Battersea, Mrs (Netty) Forbes, Lord & Lady Arthur Hill & daughter, Mr Alfred Burton– Hollman & Wolff were very amusing chaffing each other. Hollman is most ridiculous looking with a great shock of fluffy hair & long mustachios sticking straight out. He told a funny story of a bandy legged man at the railway station whom he saw laughing at his hair—how he went up to him & said “You laugh my hair? You look your legs!!” In the evening he played beautifully on the cello & afterwards Wolff took him off—then he took off Wolff. I did not so much care for the latter’s playing. They both had to leave early to play at a concert & when they had left the Ponsonby girls sang & Miss Hill also.
