16 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 16th [July 1899]. I went to 10 oclock service at the Marlborough Hse chapel– Arranged papers for Henry’s Autobiography. Connie came to lunch—& poured out her sorrows about her son Ernest’s delinquencies. I am so sorry for her. When she left I walked to Cav. Sqr to pay Blanche a visit. There Nellie joined me at 4 & walked to the New Gallery to which Mr Charles Hallé & his sister had invited us. A band was playing & we had tea. The pictures were not attractive. Came home at 5 & sat quiet till dinner– Nelly dined out. Connie came & dined with me—& went home at 11 on her bycicle. She cried bitterly over her son– How sad it is how powerless one is to help people. I all day long have been living over again all the sad hours of this time last year—when poor Arthur was dying in these very rooms!
