17 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 17th July [1899]. Nellie & I went off by 11.45 train to Hatfield to spend the day quietly. We took the two dogs Turk & Spot with us. Walked from Hatfield Station to Monty Alderson’s house & he was at home– Lunched with him & took a stroll in the Hatfield House Gardens. The drains were up for repair round the house. We got in by the drawing room window wh we opened from outside & we paid a visit to Mrs Peincé the housekeeper who was making raspberry vinegar & was very voluble on “her Ladyship’s illness” & said Mrs Hodges Her Ladyship’s maid had written to say that since H.L. had had the paralytic stroke she is in bed & cannot move—requiring 2 strong nurses to turn her & move her. Also that she is to be tapped again next week. It certainly looks bad. Monty left us to go bycicling at 4 & we went & paid a visit to Lady Florence Cecil who had just returned from a picnic with the 4 little boys. We then went back to Monty’s house, had tea and sat quiet till time to walk down to the station & leave by the 6.10 train. On getting home found letters to say Merthyr wd come & dine with us & Olwen & Miles Ponsonby also came so we were a party of 5 instead of the quiet evening we had meant to have. It was perhaps better so—& we were glad to have them—tho’ we could not forget all day that it was this day year we had such a loss in my dear brother Arthur. Today Byford the butler left me & a new man came—an Italian J. Calisto who has been very highly recommended to me–
