27 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 27th [July 1899]. Wrote letters & completed my packing. Connie came to luncheon & then we went to Claridge’s Hotel & saw Ivor & I told him I am ready to start for Plombières at 11 tomorrow morning. I left Connie to see Cornelia & I went in a hansom to Cromwell Road to call on Gertie Clay Seymer. She was not at home so I went to Novarre’s fetched Nellie & brought her home to tea. Mr Bircham came to tea & we further congratulated over the end of the Rhuvon case. He is glad to have escaped cross questioning in Court as he seems to have been very careless in many ways. Miss Oswell came also to tea to bid me good bye & Mrs Yates Thompson happened to call at the same time. She is very nice & pleasant & a great friend of Mme Riaño’s & has lately seen her in Madrid. Doris Vivian came to fetch me to drive with her. She took me again to Gertie Seymer who was in this time & I took leave of her– We took a turn in the Park and then I went to Hans Place to see Violet. They begged me to go to their mother’s door wh I did & spoke to the nurse– She gave a bad account & I was much upset at hearing poor Louie’s wanderings though only from the distance. This morning Violet came at 11 to fetch me to go with her to see the house in Mansfield Street which her mother had just bought before she fell ill. It is half of it being rebuilt & Violet had to meet the architect to give final orders. I stayed at Hans Place till past 8 & then took leave of the girls & Miss Kerm their ex-governess & came home to dinner. Louis Du Cane dined with us. I wrote letters till late & arranged everything for tomorrow’s start. Today I saw Dr Maclagan who gives a bad account of Lady Vivian.
