28 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 28th [July 1899]. I got up early, breakfasted & was just going to dress when a note from Cornelia came (9 o’cl) to say Ivor is not very well & she thought he ought not to travel & we must put off our journey till tomorrow! At abt 11 I walked to Claridge’s Hotel to see him & Cornelia & found he had had a disturbed night & had got a cold in his head & it seems uncertain that he will start till Monday. I said I wd return after lunch & I walked on to do some further shopping & home– Nela turned up to lunch & also Connie—afterwards Nela & I walked to Claridge’s but could not see Cornelia as she was engaged so parted from Nela & drove in a hansom to the Vivian’s. They were much surprised to see me again. They made me stay to tea with them & then brought me home in the carriage. At 6 Cornelia sent her brougham to fetch me & we decided not to start tomorrow. I went up to Park Crescent to tell Nela & to see Maria. She was out in her bath chair so I walked into Regent’s Park to meet her & did meet her—& walked by her side. Called at Cav. Sqr & surprised Edward by paying him a visit—as he also thought we were gone off. He said Rhuvon had only just left him. I was lucky to have escaped that. He said Rhuvon was anxious to see me—& I say I think we had better keep apart for the present at least. Edward said he is going to see the whole case in black & white to form his own opinion & wants me to see it. I dont want to hear any more about it– I have been worried enough over it. As Edward was going to dine out .
