11 September 1899 — Wengen
Monday. 11th [September 1899]. The mountains round all white this morning & the pouring rain & sleet continues here. After breakfast a council was held in my bedroom by the whole party. It was clear we could not remain at Wengen. Proposals were made to go somewhere on the Lake of Thun– I said half joking “I tell you what, you had better leave the mountains entirely & come straight to Venice & stay there with me.” There was a general shout of delight and the idea was carried unanimously. I was also very pleased as I am longing to get home. It was quickly decided that Eda & I should take the next train down to Interlaken to get railway tickets & money so we at once got our hats & escorted by the rest of the party went off to the station & took the 12 train to Lauterbrunnen which is a tremendously steep descent. It rained all the time. We changed trains & went on to Interlaken & went straight to Cook’s office to enquire for tickets—then on to Hotel Metropole to have luncheon. The hotel seemed full of disconsolate people all kept indoors by the persistent rain. At Cook’s they told us that all the tourists were leaving for Italy & that they could not even give us our tickets as they had none left. However they changed money for us & gave us all directions & information necessary & Eda & I walked back to the Ost station and took the train back to Lauterbrunnen. There we had to wait 1 hour so we walked up the road to get a good view of the Staubach falls which were now very full & grand from the heavy rains. We got some coffee at the “Chamois Hotel” & then returned to the station & went by train to Wengen. The table d’hôte dinner had begun as it was past 7 so we dressed hastily & went down & recounted our adventures. Then we all reassembled in my bedroom & had our last hotel coffee drinking—& separated to pack and to get to bed & prepare for an early start. I telegraphed to my servants to leave London & to Regina to prepare the house at Venice.
