12 September 1899 — Wengen
Tuesday. 12th [September 1899]. The torrential rain kept me awake most of the night but I was up soon after 6. We walked to the station and got our luggage taken in a hand cart—left by the 8 A.M. train, all the party in high spirits. A good many others at the Hotel Alpenrose left also today—as the rain is likely to continue & it is very cold & the mountains all round like as tho’ it were midwinter. Arrived at the Ost station at Interlaken Kate & I went together 1st class, the rest having 2nd class tickets. Abt 5 minutes in the train brought us to the Central station. We sat still talking—when in abt 10 minutes the train went off again. What was our dismay to find we were being taken back to Ost—the ticket collector told us we ought to have changed carriages in the Central station & there we were separated from our party who had gone on to Berne. Luckily there was a train to Berne ½ hour after the one the Aldersons were in & we were able to take a cab & drive to the Central Station & found the train waiting. But we had had a great fright and were very much upset. We imagined that when the party arrived at Berne (where they had an hour to wait) & did not find us in the train they would be much alarmed. However, we cd not even telegraph to them & there was nothing to be done. We got to Berne at 1.28 & went at once to the Buffet where we found our party at luncheon & not the least disturbed at our non-appearance (to our great relief) having found out about the later express train. So we lunched and all started for Lucerne at 2. There was a great deal of snow on the distant mountains & the rain continued to fall. We reached Lucerne at 4.30 & walked across from the station to Hotel St. Gothard & engaged a bedroom where Kate & I made tea from my tea basket & rested while the party went off to Cook’s office to get the tickets for Venice & registered the luggage &c. They all returned to us & we dined at the table d’hôte at 7.30. Had a good dinner well served by women who waited quietly & quickly. Kate was much disturbed at having lost a clock I had lent her which we thought must be at Berne– I wrote to the station master to enquire for it. We left Lucerne at 10.30 at night. I took Kate with me in 1st class & we were very comfortable & had the compartment to ourselves.
