13 September 1899 — Wengen
Wednesday. 13th [September 1899]. We arrived at Milan abt 7.30—just too late to catch the early train on to Venice by wh I had intended to go on with Kate while the rest of the party stayed to see Milan & were to join us at Venice in the evening—so we all had to wait. We breakfasted at the Buffet after which Cecil & the young people, Eda, Mary, Monty, Henry & Reggie Alderson & Nela Du Cane went off to the Cathedral– Later on Kate & I walked there & joined them & I left her with them & went on to Canzi the embroideress in via Radegonda. I chose some embroideries there & then walked back to the station where my maid Knapp was sitting in charge of the hand luggage. The whole party returned at 12 & we lunched in the Buffet & then left by 1.5 train for Venice. Kate & I went 1st class & had a carriage to ourselves– The rest just filled a carriage (8 with the maid) which I managed to secure for them. We reached Venice at 7 & found old Pasquale Jandelli at the station with gondoliers & 2 gondolas. Regina’s dismay on seeing 9 of us with only 1 servant was great for she had interpreted my telegram to mean 9 including servants. However the party found beds for the night & were so happy to be here that they did not complain. Regina managed to cook us some dinner & we had plenty of appetite to supply the missing sauces. I am very glad to find myself at home & the Aldersons & Nela Du Cane are delighted to be here.
