30 September 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 30th [September 1899]. The electrician was here at work again at electric lamps. At 3 Messrs Zuccato, Brown & Christie & Mrs Browning came for a Committee meeting of the Sailor’s Institute. I sent the gondola to Hotel Britannia to fetch Donna Laura & by 3.30 she came with her daughter Mme de Bülow, Prof. Blaserna—Sig: Faccioli & M. de Bülow (Minister at Berne). I joined them & we went in the gondola to the Eden’s garden which they were anxious to see. The day was dull & there were no flowers so I dont think they were very edified. On the way back a storm came on & some heavy drops of rain so we hastened here & I gave them tea. Css Canevaro came also to tea & brought with her M. & Mme Cappelli. He is an ex-diplomat & was Min: for F.A. at Rome for 6 weeks before the Ministry fell & he was succeeded by Canevaro—who also is no longer Minister. I showed the Minghetti all over the house—even to the kitchen– Faccioli made me thro’ Donna Laura compliments wh are flattering to even an old woman as I am. He said I was like “une Madonna del tre cento–”!!
