2 October 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 2nd [October 1899]. Busy morning giving out stores and linen. At 12 went to our church to meet Mr Brown, Mr Wood & Mr Melton Fisher & see the piece of the front of the organ gallery wh is put up for inspection. It seems to me very nice. Went to H. Britannia & arranged to take Minghetti party in afternoon—& then home to lunch. At 3 went in gondola to the Canevaros. On the way there we were run into by a boy with a sandolo he could not manage. My 1st gondolier put out his hand to ward off the blow & was knocked down—but happily escaped with bruises. I sent him on to fetch the Minghetti & I joined them at Moses of the Tower’s shop of antiquities. Took them back to their hotel & came home to tea & rest. The electric light was finished by this evening & I was able to have it all lighted in the eveng when I had my usual reception. It is a great improvement & the house & things in it look lovely with the light. I could not help thinking how pleased Henry would have been at it. The Canevaros & Belmondos & Bentivoglios & Ro Cozzi came in the eveng. Also Mr Albert Ball & Mr Harold & Lady Victoria Russell who are here en touristos. I met Lord Currie at the Canevaro’s this afternoon & he promised to come but send word he had a headache & could not do so.
