18 October 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 18th [October 1899]. Had a long disquisition in the kitchen with Jane about the shaping of cutlets & tried my hand at it. It is not so easy as one would think. Sophy, May & I went after lunch in gondola to the Piazza & walked thence to the Public Gardens & the Island of S. Elena—& back in gondola. M. le Mallier the French Consul came to tea & Iduna– Sophy & May went out in gondola after dinner as it was a fine moonlit night. I retired early & read Lady Mary Wortley’s letters which are a great delight to me.
