12 November 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 12th [November 1899]. I wrote a letter to Mr Christie suggesting we should do some work for the sufferers in the Transvaal war & I took it to the 10.30 service at Church & gave it him. It came most appropriately as he preached a very patriotic & eloquent sermon. I took Iduna to church with me & we settled to go in the afternoon to the Edens garden. I called for her & her husband in my gondola at 2.30 & we went straight to the Giudecca & found the Edens alone. I suggested to Carry that we should form a Committee & asked her to be on it which she consented to be. We had tea in the Palm house & came home at 5. It was a lovely day but rather colder & there was a little wind. The chrysanthemums begin to droop. I went to the service at the sailors Institute at 7.30 with Knapp & Jane the cook & got back to dinner at 9. This morng’s post brought me a letter from Count Seckendorff saying Empress Frederick is at Trent & saying H.M. wishes to see me there. I answered by R. of Post I will go there next Tuesday as the weather is now fine.
