27 November 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 27th [November 1899]. A long morning going over the whole house from cellar to attic. Typed & finished the Catalogue with Henry’s notes that I am going to get bound up with the small water colour copies I am making of the pictures. After lunch I carried the sheets to Nardo opposite S. Lorenzo the Greek Church—& gave them to him to bind. Then I walked back to Pal: Barbarigo and paid Mr & Mrs Eden a visit. Met there a French Lady Mme Bompard wife of a French artist who comes often to Venice to work. She is young & nice looking & I was told, sings delightfully. I stayed on talking to the Edens after she left & got home on foot abt 6. It was cold– Mr & Mrs & Miss Sarianna Browning dined with me. A pleasant little quiet meal. In the evening I had the usual reception. Carry Eden, Mme Noce, Clara & Ellen & Augustus Montalba—Sr Vergara & the brothers Cozzi. I have had 2 charming letters from the Empress these days from Trent. She says she is pleased to think that henceforth Englishmen & women at Venice will be called to prayer by the silvery tones of the bell she has given–
