6 December 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 6th [December 1899]. I walked to the Montalba’s on the Zattere by 10 oclock to have my first sitting to Ellen for my portrait. It was a cold day. She has a little studio in the attics of her home. Walked home by lunch time. Afterwards went out in gondola & called to see the Edens—& had tea with them & then came home. Iduna Bel: came to see me & sat talking till 7 when Mr & Mrs Christie came & we dined & went directly after to the Sailor’s Institute to be present at a social evening. There were about 40 men there. The men sang & Mr Newman & his daughter—but it was not a great success so I summoned up my courage & sang three songs, Robin Adair, Strangers Yet & Nellie Darling with great applause– I had not sung since I left Constantinople 20 years ago & was surprised to find I had any voice at all. I found I had just eno’ to satisfy my simple audience. We the Christies & I left at 10 & I sent them home in my gondola.
