12 December 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 12th [December 1899]. Woke to find a tremendous snow storm raging. It continued all day & it was very difficult to warm my rooms– I did not attempt to warm the drawing room floor. My bedroom this morning was 54 after a fire all night. The whole day it has been almost impossible to get any room over 55º. I had my meals in the studio & sat in the library & copied a picture by Buonconsiglio wh I had brought up from the drawing room. Saw no one but the servants all day. Very low at Transvaal War news. Genl Gatacre badly defeated!
