23 December 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 23rd [December 1899]. I left Venice by 9.50 train & went to Stanghella to stay with my dear friend Countess Pisani for the “feste.” I got there in time for lunch which we took upstairs in the great sala. She is so crippled with rheumatism that she cannot rise from her chair without help & walks with the help of a stick. We have much to say to each other—the War to discuss & friends to talk of. We dined downstairs at 7 o’cl & went to bed at 9.30. D. Antonio the priest dined with us.
