28 January 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 28th [January 1900]. I remained in bed till lunch—still rather unwell. Connie came to lunch. She talked about her own troubles with her boy & I offered to lend her money to help her to pay her debts– She was pleased– I hope I may be a help to her. It is sad how that wretched boy of hers is spoiling her life poor thing– At 3 we walked out together. It was snowing this morning when I woke but the snow had mostly melted before the afternoon. We parted in Hertford Street at Adeline Bedford’s door. I wanted to consult her as to my next steps. It happened that Lady Grosvenor came in at the same moment. I said I wanted Lady Lansdowne to know of the Madeira scheme & Lady G said she was on her Committee to help officers wives & families & she would go at once to see Lady Lansdowne & write to me. I then went on to the Dss of St Albans in Cadogan Gardens to tell her what we are doing. She was at home & I explained all to her & then came home to tea. Arthur Du Cane came to dine with me & we talked it all over. He promised to try & find out the history of the Dring family. I also consulted him with reference to the British & Foreign Mission to Seamen as their secy has written an impertinent letter with many false statements as to the Sailor’s Institute at Venice wh I want to confute.
