29 January 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 29th [January 1900]. This morning at 11.30 we had our first Madeira Committee meeting at which were only Mrs Dring, Dr Hyslop & myself. We got through a lot of business. Miss Faithful was present & gave us help with many suggestions. We decided that she is to start for Madeira on Saturday & authorised her to get her passage out & that of her friend. We also accepted Miss Ella Dring (niece) as her secy. All this took so long to do that it was nearly two before it was over & we got our lunch. Miss Faithfull remained to lunch with us. At 2.30 Lady Poynter came to fetch me in her carriage & took me to the National Gallery where we were received in the Board Room by Sir Edward Poynter & I was introduced to Mr Turner the Keeper—who seemed charming—then we went up & Sir Edward pointed out to me the pictures wh had been brought since I was there in 93. I am glad now that I have been there & I enjoyed it & shall go again. Lady Poynter drove me home soon after 4. Had tea & then started for Lansdowne House where I had been summoned to see Mrs Hope who is acting secy for Lady Lansdowne’s Officer’s wives fund. We agreed to work in touch with each other. I was leaving the house when Lady Lansdowne came in & I said all I had to say over again to her & she was pleasant & courteous & appeasing. Thence I walked to Adeline Bedford’s. She was in & I had a second tea with her & a long talk over the Madeira scheme. She said I must get a chairman & must insist on having Duncannon– So I took a cab & drove to Cav. Sqr I met him on his doorstep just returning home & I did all I could to persuade him to be chairman. He at last promised to think it over—& said he would come & dine with me so I went home as it was then past 7. Nellie returned today from the country & invited Mr Cazenove to dine which was a good move as I want him for our committee. He accepts & offers to be Treasurer. Being on the stock Exchange he will be very useful. Duncannon said I must get the Base hospital communicated with & the Portuguese Min. in London before he settles to be our Chairman. I went to bed very tired. The news from the War are very depressing.
