12 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 12th February [1900]. Nellie & I went off in a hansom to Bethlem Hospital to have a talk with Dr Hyslop abt Madeira Homes. We found him in & had a long talk after which he took us into one of the wards of the hospital where several patients were sitting. It seemed beautifully arranged—a long corridor nicely furnished, bright with flowers, furniture, china &c &c. What most impressed me is that every door was unlocked & locked by our guide as we went along. He took us to see the theatre & ball room which are very fine & where he says they have frequent entertainments. We returned home for 1.30 lunch– After lunch I walked to Gros. Gardens to see Mrs Hargreaves Brown (née Blandy) to ask her more questions abt Madeira wh she kindly answered & her acct of Mrs Dring was such as to confirm our desire to be rid of her. I then walked home thro’ Green Park & up St James’ St & went in to the Venice Murano Glass shop & made acquaintance with Mr Ainslie who is the new manager there & who told me he had been at Harrow & Cambridge with my younger brothers. I then came home to 5 o’clock tea. Dr Hyslop & Mr Cazenove & Arthur Du Cane met here at that time to talk over the Madeira Homes. Mr & Mrs Walrond called & Mr W. said he knew the Duke of Abercorn’s secy for the Officers Convalescent Home & offered to write & beg him to call on me tomorrow. Mrs Arthur Layard called & then my sister Blanche. I gave Mrs Layard the Austen family Bible. Lady Gregory dined with us.
