13 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 13th [February 1900]. I received a letter from Mrs Dring saying she hoped our Madeira Committee would not resign & wishing to withdraw from it herself. I answered her that we all resigned as the matter had been made over to the D. of Abercorn. Mr Arthur Broderick called on me about 10 & I explained all the Madeira affair to him & settled that Dr Hyslop should appear before the Duke’s Committee at Hampden House & explain our scheme at 5.30. This was a very useful move. He foresees a difficulty in getting officers to Madeira as the Govt transports do not stop there on their return from S. Africa. After lunch I walked to Queen’s Square to see my mothers old maid Moody in the Hospital for Paralysis. It was a bitter day—a cutting wind & very dirty under foot as it takes some time to get the snow cleared away from all the streets. I saw Moody & sat with her a little while & then walked home to tea. Dr Bond came to tea & we unfolded the Madeira scheme to him & asked him to be on the Committee. He promised to make various enquiries for us. It began to snow again about this time & was also freezing so that it was very unpleasant when we, Nellie & I, set out to dine with the Duncannons—but we were fortunate eno’ to get 4 wheeled cab & so did not get wet. It is a wild night.
