14 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 14th [February 1900]. It was still snowing at 7.30 this morning. The post brought me a letter from Mrs Browning returning me the £100 I had lent her. Nellie laid up with migraine. My sister Kate arrived before lunch to stay with me. After lunch she & I went for a walk together for an hour & then hastened home as I had to prepare for a Committee meeting of the Madeira Convalescent homes—an informal one. Dr Hyslop came at 5 to fetch the necessary papers to take with him to put before the Duke of St Alban’s Committee. Dr Bond came & Mr Cazenove to await the result on Dr Hyslop’s return. He told us when he came that the Duke’s Committee after much discussion authorized us to proceed tho’ they seemed to think our scheme is not an easy one. Mr Broderick promised us to write the official answer & to let us have it by tomorrow. We decided on having a Committee meeting Friday at 6. This morning I was persuaded in my own mind that the scheme was doomed. This evening it seems to have taken a fresh start. I went to see Adeline Bedford & gave her an account of what had taken place.
