24 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 24th [February 1900]. Walked out in the morning to see the Duncannons at Cav. Sqr & called on Mrs Pember in Bryanston Sqr but she was out so I came home by 1 to see Dr Wainwright whom I had telephoned for. I found Monty Alderson come to beg for refreshment before going to the theatre. I sent him to the dining room to get it and had my interview with Dr W. He readily consented to go as a volunteer to Madeira to take charge & I privately guaranteed his passage. He promised to write & to take his ticket at once. Later on he telegraphed to say all places in Currie’s boats for Saty were taken but he had got one from Liverpool (Elder & Dempster). I then went to lunch with Lady FitzGerald as I got a very disquieting letter from her about Violet & Doris Vivian’s quarrels. Doris was gone away for 2 days. I had a talk with Lady F. alone & see she is not a person to manage Violet who is very excited & nervous just now. We talked over possible plans & poor Violet cried & said she would like to go abroad—& I said I wd try & help her to arrange it. Lady F. sent Violet & me out for a drive in her carriage leaving cards & paying visits & then Violet dropped me here by 4.30. Louis Du Cane came to tea with me. I typed notices for Monday’s committee meeting. Dined alone.
