25 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 25th [February 1900]. I went to the 10 oclock service. Saw there the Princess of Wales, Pss Victoria & the D. of York in the front pew. Coming home I met Lady Arthur Russell & Lady Sligo who is a friend of my girlhood. I walked with her to her present abode in Tilney Street & sat with her for some while chatting. She is very amusing & interesting– Reads a great deal & knows things both about England & France being herself French tho’ her mother was English. On my return home to lunch I found my sister Connie in the hall writing a note to beg me to dine with her this evening which I agreed to do. She then went off. Ruth Du Cane came to lunch with me. Fred Thesiger paid me a visit. Nela came abt 6.30 to stay & dine so I told her we were both to dine with Connie. Just as I was going to dress a Genl Eaton asked to see me bringing me a letter from the Dss of St Albans. He came to talk about the Madeira scheme & to say he had bad reports both of Mrs Dring & of Mr Muchado & that the War Office had negatived their offer & in fact he seemed put out at the whole affair. However I explained & soothed & smoothed him & he went away reassured & wishing us success. We went off Nela & I, in a cab to 8 Onslow Gardens. Connie, Charlie, Bee, & Mr Alfred Burton composed our party. Connie played to us as beautifully as ever—& charming old music. We conveyed Mr Burton home in our cab.
