27 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 27th February [1900]. Great joy today—the news that Cronje the Boer Commander at Paardeberg has surrendered to Genl Lord Roberts. For the last three days we have been holding our breath & hoping to hear of it & now it has come at last & on the very anniversary of the battle of Majuba where we were defeated—so that the bitterness of the recollection is wiped out. I at once telegraphed the news to Countess Pisani at Vescovana. Nellie returned to town this morning & we took a walk in the afternoon—& shopped. Returned to 5 o’cl tea. Violet Vivian came to tea. Miss Oswell dined & we typed in evening.
