5 March 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 5th [March 1900]. Henry’s birthday. Wrote letters &c. Went out at 10.30 to see Blanche who sent word she has a cold– Home again soon after 12. Adeline Bedford came at 1 to meet Sophy Palmer who came to lunch with me. The latter is very unhappy at the death of her cousin Col. Ormelie Hannay—in battle. He had been missing since 18th Feb. & no news cd be got of him, till at last a telegram fm Ld Roberts said his body had been found & buried. It appears Col. Hannay was a very good man & his regiment was devoted to him & he had a wonderful influence on every one. Sophy left me at 2.30. Olwen Ponsonby called for me & took me for a drive. We saw Mrs Rate who has just returned to town, & then went to Queen’s Square to see my mother’s maid Moody at the Paralytic Hospital. Poor thing, the Drs tell her she has a tumour in the thigh & it is uncurable. She wonderfully brave & said she only minds for her sister’s sake who is devoted to her. Came home at 4.30 & found Violet Vivian arrived to stay with me. Nela came to tea– Arthur Du Cane called later. I gave my butler Green notice he must leave. The poor man has been ill in bed for 10 days with acute gout & I cannot keep him on. Ivor & Cornelia dined with me also Edward Duncannon & his daughter Irène. She sang in the evening.
