8 March 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 8th [March 1900]. As the Queen came to town today I walked with Violet to Hyde Park & we stood near the carriage drive of the Serpentine to see her pass. There were masses of people who gave her a most enthusiastic reception. Cheers resounded, flags were waved & every body looked delighted. There was a difficulty in getting about thro’ the crowd, every one was so good natured. We came straight home. Violet went out again to luncheon with Lady Hood. Miss Wyld came to see me after lunch to see if there was any chance of her being wanted for Madeira as if not she was going abroad. I advised her to go & not to wait as we have no patients in our home yet. We walked out together a little way & then I went to the Dss of St Albans to meet Major D. Morgan the head of the “Princess of Wales” Hospital ship to ask him if he thought any officers would avail themselves of our Madeira Homes. He thought very decidedly not & said he believed we should have none at all– He was a very pleasant man & told us how he had brought home his shipful of invalids without losing one man. He also told us of the splendid work of the hospital trains in S. Africa. From there I came home & gave Violet tea & her friend Miss Hood. Nellie went away to Northamptonshire to hunt. Violet & I had a quiet evening & a talk over her worries. I am very sorry for the poor child.
