14 March 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 14th March [1900]. I went with Nelly in the morning down to Kensington. I called to enquire how Sir Fred Burton was at 43 Argyll Road. His old housekeeper gave a sad account of him. He is kept under morphia to spare him pain. He does not see people. I called for Nelly at her shop & brought her home to luncheon. Lady Gregory lunched with us. At 3 I went to Wimborne House to see Cornelia & to meet Mrs Pember who came to make Cornelia’s acquaintance & to discuss sending clothing to St Vincent for the Sick & Wounded. I then returned home. “Jack” Gordon came to see me & stayed to tea. I found him very pro Boer & teased him about it. We were chatting away when the footman brought me a message that Dr Burton wanted to see me downstairs. I was at once alarmed & ran down to Monty’s room– Mr Burton & Monty were there. Mr Burton came out at once & we went to the dining room & he told me Monty is not well. They were both at Sir Charles Hall’s funeral in St Margarets Church Westr & just before the service Burton was called out to help Monty who had fainted. He said he brought him home here in a cab & had been here ever since abt 3. Monty wished him to tell me what had happened as he himself was a good deal alarmed. He knows his heart is not strong & fears it was an attack which Burton does not believe. Monty had some food in his sitting room. Miss Oswell came to ask if she might dine with me as she was suffering from a toothache wh she happily lost after a good meal. Nelly sat with Monty in the evening & said he had sent again for Dr Burton as he finds he has got hemorrhage of the bowel wh accounts for his fainting today. Burton promises to bring Dr Broadbent tomorrow morng. I received a cablegram from Miss Faithful asking that a nurse should be sent to Madeira as she has 2 patients– I at once wrote to Miss Bickmore at the County Hospital at Winchester.
