23 April 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 23rd [April 1900]. A Madeira Home committee meeting had been called by this morning at 11.45. Addie Bedford told me thro’ the telephone that she was not certain she cd come– I begged her to make the effort & she said she wd come late. Dr Hyslop sent a messenger to say he was not well & could not come. Lady G. Cecil came early & finding no one here said she would return later. Dr Bond did the same– At last about 12 we got together an informal meeting of Adeline Bedford, Lady Gwendolin, Dr Bond & myself. We decided about nurses to be sent out & deputed me to make all arrangements. Miss Oswell came up early to make notes for us & when the meeting was over I took her in a cab back to her office in Victoria St. I called on the Surg: Genl Muir to ask him rules about nurses & found that they must be fully trained & join the Army Reserve. I went on [to] the War Office & saw Quarter Master Genl Sir Charles Mansfield Clarke Bt to ask him whether H.M. Govt was going to send out our nurses. He was very civil & said he could not give me an answer yet but wd sent to me. I then went home to luncheon. Nela came to luncheon. At 3 I took a hansom & went off to Bethlem to see Dr Hyslop to report progress—to ask him to order the ward requisites &c. I found him suffering from a bad throat. We had a long confab. We congratulated ourselves on being rid of Miss Faithfull—of whom Dr Wainwright privately had sent him a very unfavorable report. On leaving there I walked to Atkinson’s a draper near Waterloo Bridge & ordered the linen for the Layard Home. Thence to St Thomas’ Hospital to see Mr Wainwright & arrange with him about sending out a nurse he has to recommend—& so on in a hansom on home to tea by 5.30—having done a good day’s work. Nellie & Eda Alderson arrived about 6. Mr Bishop of the Stock Exchange came to dine & talk about the affairs of the Venezia-Murano Glass Co.
