26 April 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 26th [April 1900]. Siret departed & I engaged in his place Torfitt who had come as a stop gap while Siret had been away. Let us hope for better luck. This is the 4th butler I have had in my house this year! After lunch I went off in a hansom to Bethlem to see Dr Hyslop & after a business talk with him about the Layard Home I went over the female wards with him & to the “excited” ward. There were a great many new patients. I took a large packet of bonbons with me & offered some to the patients as I went along. Most of them were pleased & took them gladly. On leaving Bethlem I walked as far as Westr Bridge calling in at Atkinson to enquire about the hospital linen I had ordered to be ready also called on Mr Wainwright at the Treasurer’s House St Thomas’ Hospital to tell him what was going on about the Layard Home & thence I returned home in a hansom & found Nellie & Eda at tea. This morng at 10 Mr Cazenove called for me & took me in a hansom into the city to the Mansion House by appointment for me to interview the Lord Mayor. I explained to him what was being done with regard to the removal of the Home from Madeira to S. Africa & asked him if he would give us money for it from the public subscriptions. At first he demurred but when I told him we had applied to the Govt for help & support, he at once signified his approval & said that if the Govt consented to this he was ready to consider the matter & had no doubt he could do something for us. He invited me to go with him to have a cup of coffee (it was only 10.30) & when we went to his private dining room we found his breakfast being cleared away. I said we wanted the Lady Mayoress to join our committee– He said she should answer for herself & sent for her. The Lady Mayoress came & on our taking leave of His Worship she led Mr Cazenove & me into her boudoir. There we talked it all over again while drinking our coffee & I explained the Scheme. The L. Mayoress said she was willing to give her name but could not attend the meeting. After a few minutes her son came in saying his father had sent him to talk to me about the Home, as he thought he might be useful to us seeing he (the son) had just returned from S. Africa. He said he felt sure the Home was much wanted—that Mr Logan is a great & rich contractor in S. Africa. We then discussed how much money we should be likely to want from the Fund & decided that £500 would be sufficient. The Lady Mayoress said she was certain the L. Mayor would give us that & she promised to get us some old linen which I told her we wanted. Mr Cazenove put me into a hansom & I returned home well satisfied with the result of my mission & morning’s work.
