27 April 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 27th [April 1900]. Got another cable signed “Jalrophie” saying there is no staff or furniture at Matjesfontein without buying– Nellie & Eda went out together. I walked out after lunch. Went to the Garry Hill Depot & saw Miss Jeffery & talked over the work with her– Then walked on to S. Audley St– Evely Eliot passed me driving—stopped her carriage & took me in. We called on Mrs Rate who was out & then Evely brought me home. It was a bitter cold day. E. wind. Arthur DC came to tea– Eda & I had a heavy tea then dressed & went off to Bethlem to a threatrical performance Rip Van Winkle a charming operetta given by the Stratham Lyrical Co it was wonderfully well done & one would never have suspected it was done by amateurs– The singing, scenery &c were excellent & there was not a fault to find. We got home rather late–
