3 May 1900 — 3 Savile Row | |
Thursday. 3rd [May 1900]. As I have put all the arrangements for sending off Nurses & stores to S. Africa in the hands of Mr Oliver Williams the Agent my hard work is pretty well over. The 2 extra nurses, Bond & McLeish, & the linen, plate & ward requisites &c will leave England on Saturday next, the Govt paying expenses of journey & giving rations to staff at the home on arrival. Nellie & I went off to Hatfield to have luncheon with Eda & Monty Alderson & to pay him a farewell visit at the Chaplain’s House as he leaves his Curacy & goes next Monday to his living of Chesterton near Peterborough. He & Eda met us at the station & we walked to the Chaplain’s House together & lunched at 1 o’clock. Reggie Alderson was at home. Afterwards we took leave of Monty who had to go out on parish work & we walked to the House. Met Lord William Cecil on the way walking down to the Rectory. He turned back with us & we went through the gardens to the House & found Lady Cranborne & Lady William just going for a drive. As Lady Florence (as Lady Wm styles herself) was very anxious to show me her twin baby girls we all went to the Rectory—Lady Cranborne driving me & the rest walking. There we went thro’ the usual baby worship– The 2 month old babys Eva & Molly are dear little fat contented little things & the delight of their mother’s heart. When Lady Cranborne & Lady Florence drove away Eda, Nellie & I went for a stroll in the Hatfield gardens—we thought & talked of poor Lady Salisbury who less than a year ago was alive & the centre of the Cecil family life. Her sitting room is still kept bright with flowers tho’ nobody uses the room– We walked down to the station & Nell & I returned to town by 4.17 train getting home to tea by 5.30. Had a dinner party consisting of Mr & Mrs John Murray, Mr & Mrs Arthur Walrond, Mr & Mrs Arthur Layard, Mr & Mrs Ernest Villiers, Mr Phipps & Sir Julian Salomans R.C. The latter was the great amusement of the company. His queer ways & talk guileless of the letter H, his compliments & odd talk made him quite popular. He is Agent for Australia but has resigned & his successor will arrive very shortly. | |
