2 June 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 2nd June [1900]. Wrote letters. Typed Henry’s Crimean journal. Capt. La Terrière came to lunch having finally installed Nellie in her dressmaking establishment. His wife is her partner. Nellie went off to Hatfield for Whitsuntide. I had thought of going away but am so tired I think it best to remain quiet at home. Monty also went away to the Priory at Reigate. I am glad to be quite quiet. I got a long interesting letter from S. Africa from Dr Wainwright. He had seen the Matjesfontein House. It is a wayside railway station 200 miles from Capetown. A half finished Hotel but he is going to arrange it. Fresh provisions must come from Capetown. Milk from Worcester (100 miles) & washing from 150 miles! I began to type write out his letter but had several visits, Violet Vivian with her little sister & governess. Theresa Rassam—Mrs Denestoun, Mrs Arthur Hanson’s daughter—whom I had known as a little girl at Constantinople. After tea I went to see Adeline Bedford—showed her the Dr’s letter & discussed it with her & then went on to Park Crescent. It was late when I got there so I stayed to dinner with Richard & Ruth & sat with Maria afterwards as she does not dine at table now—being too feeble. A telegram from Ivor came to settle about the family going to live at Longham in a house [he] is going to give them rent free—they gladly accept it. Maria is too ill & feeble to going living in town. Found the house very peaceful when I came home to bed.
