4 June 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 4th June [1900]. Sir Edward Poynter Director of the National Gallery came in the morning to look at a Venetian fresco Henry had & which is in Monty’s sitting room. He wants it removed so I have asked the National Gallery to take it as I have no room for it. He came & liked it very much & agreed to take it for the Gallery. We talked of the fire wh took place last week in a house touching the Gallery. He says the Govt is going to buy part of the house & to pull it down so as to isolate the National Gallery. We then spoke of the Tate Gallery lately built & as I said I had never been to see it Sir Edward suggested that I should go with him then as he was going there– He took me there in his carriage & took me all over the Gallery which is well built & lighted & the pictures of Modern British art make a brave show. I left him there & came home in a cab to lunch at 2. Did not go out again– Worked, read & wrote. Nela looked in a moment before dinner. I dined alone & went early to bed. Today Whit Monday, was a Bank Holiday & the town is curiously still & quiet.
