8 June 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 8th [June 1900]. I went off in a cab to the city to lunch with the Lady Mayoress at 1.30 & to ask about getting a further grant from the Lord Mayor’s Fund. There I met the Servian Minister and sat next to him at lunch. He has only been 2 months in England & was glad to find some one who could talk French to him. Lady Newton speaks very fair French. I was referred to Mr Soulsby the Secy & discussed my errand with him & was promised £250 with which I was fain to be content & I returned home. When Mr Cazenove came later to see me I told him what I had done. Just after he had left the house I received a long letter from Dr Wainwright reporting progress or rather enumerating his difficulties which are great & at the same came a telegram asking for £400 so I rushed off to Seymour Street after Mr Cazenove to ask him to see to it. He was not at home so I wrote him a note there & then came home. Knapp went home to her family in a very agitated state.
